Secret Scientist Sunglasses for the Summer Are on the Way

Aug 17, 2020

Today, sunglasses serve as both a fashion staple as well as a way to protect the eyes from the harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun. Much like with the other items of clothing we’ve talked about, sunglasses have a fascinating history we’ll briefly go into.

Sunglasses were worn by the Inuit (a group of indigenous people inhabiting certain Arctic regions) during prehistoric times. Back then, they weren’t so much sunglasses as they were walrus ivory with a slit to allow the Inuit to see. This makeshift eyewear served as a way to protect the Inuit from snowstorms.

Once the Chinese discovered sunglasses, they improved on what the Inuit did by making them using smoky quartz. Interestingly, they were used largely to conceal the expressions of judges. Sunglasses would gain further adoption after a London-based optician began using green lenses to assist with vision problems.

It was in the 20th century that sunglasses evolved into the fashionable item they are today. During the 1900s, they were being sold on the Atlantic City boardwalk and it was also during this time that the perennially popular aviator design emerged.
