A Brief History of the Basketball Jersey

Jun 05, 2020

Before basketball jerseys became synonymous and easily identifiable with the sport, it was anything goes when it came to what to wear. Believe it or not, the games were initially being played in pants before shorts and jerseys become the staple we know today. Let’s take a brief look at the evolution of jerseys.

It was in 1900 when designers brainstormed a way to create uniformity among teams through the use of below the knee shorts, albeit tight ones. However, it wasn’t until the 1920s when jerseys turned into the short and loose tops they are today. By the 1940s and 50s, the use of wool transitioned into manmade material. Around this time, the staple of emblazoning numbers on the jerseys also became common.

Fast forward several decades into the 80s. Six-time NBA champion and basketball legend Michael Jordan requested that his shorts be looser, taller, and more relaxed. His request would be granted and the 1980s would mark the end of tight basketball shorts.
